General Recycling Facts:

  • The average person throws away four punds of waste EVERY DAYS.

  • Product packing accounts for 1/3 of our trash.

  • Paper is the most common found item in trash bins around the world.

Paper usage % and need to know facts:

  • Recycled paper can be made into our every day suppliments such as, paper towels, notebook paper, envelopes, copy paper and other paper products, as well as boxes, hydro-mulch, molded packaging, compost, and even kitty litter!
  • More than 56% of the paper consumed in the U.S. during 2007 was recovered for recycling. This impressive figure equals nearly 360 pounds of paper for each man, woman, and child in America!
  • Just to produce the weekly Sunday paper's, 500,000 trees must be chopped down!
  • Recycling all of our newspaper, we would save about 250,000,000 trees each year!
  • If you makes a 15-year-old tree into paper grocery bags, you'd get about 700 of them!! Within one hour, a supermarket could use all of them! This means in one year, one supermarket can go through over 6 million paper bags! Imagine just how many supermarkets there are just in the United States!
  • Heating homes for 20 years uses up the 50,000,000 wood and paper we throw away each year!
  • The U.S. approximatly throws away 1 billion trees worth of paper every year!

Plastic use and abuse:

  • Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every HOUR! Most of thoes are just thrown away and NOT recycled!!

  • Every year Americans throw away 250,000,000,000 styrofoam cups!!
  • Recycling plastic saves twice the amount of energy as burning it in an incinerator!

Glass facts and usage:

  • An everyday glass bottle would take 4000 YEARS to decompose, and even LONGER if it was in a landfill!
  • Mining and transporting raw materials for glass produces about 385 pounds of waste for every ton of glass that is made. If recycled glass is substituted for half of the raw materials, the waste is cut down by more than 80%.
  • Every MONTH americans throw out enough glass bottles to fill up an ENTIRE SKYSCRAPER!!

THESIS- the air is being extremely polluted by bad human habits, with that people are destroying the ozone, and we need to do something about it.
  • many studies have proven that living in major cities increases your risk of heart attacks because of air pollution.
  • By 2070 the hole in the ozone layer over Antartica could be largely fixed. The only drawback is they can’t find a cheap enough scaffholder to quote for the job.co2-rise.gif
  • Can you see a rise?
  • pollution_sources_chart.jpg
  • Power plants emit 90% of the total amout of sulfur dioxide in the air
  • The US and China are the largest contributers to air pollution. As soon as we get on board with air pollution, maybe China will follow us.
even Dr. Suess is agagnst pollution^

  • Air pollution contributes to both air polluion, and water pollution...Notice how light up New York is.
  • every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease!
  • 40% of Americas rivers are to polluted for fishing, swimming, and aquatic life
